Tuesday 5/24/16
When done with all EOY objectives given on Jan 6th on the wiki, re-share your EOY PPT with me. Also make sure to put the shareable link into an e-mail to me, as the school net is not working dependably. Then make sure your car test is completed to 100%. You will START the MAISA "Timeline of the Universe" when done with the EOY PPT, EOY Test (<90%) and Car Test (100%) (Screenshot all and send them to me). Starting today, when you complete a task, you must e-mail me the link, and the grade.
I know it is an extra step, but I suspect the M-step has impacted our internet connections as many of you have noted. This is just to be safe in case it does not go through! It also creates a digital footprint of your accomplishments in your drive so we can search and find it if needed!

When you have them all done, see me for the password to take the EOY TEST in Moodle.
When you are all done watch this link. Then kiss your computer goodbye,...... you are breaking up forever!

  1. Earth is struck by five pounds or little more than 2 kilograms of sunlight every second.
  2. The very furthest galaxies are spreading away from us at more than 90% of the speed of light.
  3. The mass of a black hole is directly related to its size. A bigger black hole will have more mass. The mass of our universe appears to be the exact amount needed to make a black hole the size of our universe. In other words: We may all live inside a black hole.
  4. If two pieces of the same type of metal touch in space, they will bond and be permanently stuck together.
  5. The Sun contains 99.86% of all the matter in the Solar System.
  6. The core of the sun produces heat at about the same rate as compost (per volume).
  7. Astronauts in orbit actually experience 90% of the gravity that people on the surface of Earth experience. They float because they are essentially in free fall.
  8. Some Neutron stars are only six miles across and spin 600-700 times a second.
  9. More energy from the sun hits Earth every hour than the planet uses in a year.
  10. The Milky Way galaxy is whirling rapidly, spinning our sun and all its other stars at around 100 million km per hour.

A Freak of Navigation

En route from Vancouver to Australia on Dec. 30, 1899, the captain of the S.S. Warrimoo spotted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. At midnight, he stopped the ship at the intersection of the international date line and the equator.
At that moment, the ship was straddling two different hemispheres, days, months, years, seasons, and centuries, all at the same time. By passing between the bow and the stern, passengers could stroll between winter and summer, north and south, and the 19th and 20th centuries.
The downside: For the Warrimoo, Dec. 31 disappeared entirely.
(Roberto Casati points out that if you return to this point on June 21 and lie down on the deck, at midnight your left hand will be in summer, your right hand in spring, your left foot in winter, and your right foot in autumn.)

Welcome to engineering, find a partner to sit next to at the Granite lab desk and read your "Welcome to Engineering page and be ready to take some BRIEF notes.

Why do we teach engineering and technology?
  • We live in a technological world. The purpose of this course, like any other, is to help students understand and appreciate their world.
  • Literacy in engineering and technology is as important today as being able to read and write.
  • We need to be a nation which creates technology, not merely consumes it.
  • It is important that students become comfortable in solving problems with open-ended solutions.
  • Because of this importance, engineering and technology concepts are part of the Massachusetts State Frameworks, and are tested on the Grade 8 MCAS.
How do we teach engineering and technology?
  • Students learn to embrace failure- engineering knowledge is gained only through analyzed failure; design only occurs through a cyclical process of brainstorming, building, testing, and re-design.
  • Students learn that all design requires trade-offs of strength, cost, performance, efficiency and esthetics.
  • Students learn to solve complex design problems through breaking them down into simpler questions.

Classroom rules- Respect

First 10-15 minutes read then build.

Projects:

Helicopter-Teacher supplied- One Day
Ship a chip- One and a half days
Save Timmy from the well four days.
EggDrop- Teacher supplied Three days

Catapult plane Three Days
Zipline rescue- teacher supplied Three days
Mousetrap/ Propeller Car -need mousetraps arm CD wheels/round things Two Weeks

Catapult- One week

Judobot- Two weeks

Read your book for the first 10 minutes, then,... research terms today then we will build tomorrow

On the giant white board using the white boards, as a lab table please write what you know about the time frame of Apollo space program of the 1960-1970 in the following areas;

Military history

Social change history

Political change

Scientific change
We will listen to 8 minutes of 1960 music to give you some talking points. On a small white board write down any thing you have a question on, i.e-what a lyric means etc.

Give an example of a design trade-off:

What is meant by an elegant design?

Why do engineers test prototypes to failure?
